Sewer Cleaning

The sewer system is a vital part of infrastructure that channels wastewater, stormwater, and other effluents safely and efficiently to treatment plants or natural water bodies. Over time, sewer pipes can accumulate grease,

sediment, debris, root intrusions, and other buildups, which can cause blockages, flow disruptions, and even pipe breakage. Therefore, regular sewer cleaning is crucial for public utilities, private businesses, and residential areas.

Why is sewer cleaning necessary?

A properly functioning sewer system ensures hygiene, health safety for residents, and environmental protection. Blockages and stagnant water can cause:

  • Unpleasant odors
  • Flooding and property damage
  • Health hazards (e.g., spread of bacteria and mold)
  • Environmental pollution
  • High repair costs

Maintaining the sewer system is not only about solving problems but also about prevention. Regular cleaning allows the system to operate at maximum efficiency and reduces the likelihood of failures.

Cleaning Methods

Different cleaning methods are used depending on the system size, pipe diameter, type of blockage, and degree of contamination:

  • High-pressure jetting – The most common and effective method. Water pressure (up to 300 bar) is used to clean grease, sediment, and debris from pipe walls. Various nozzles allow the water stream to be directed at specific problem areas. This method is fast, eco-friendly, and suitable for preventive maintenance.
  • Mechanical cleaning – Spiral or brush-based mechanical tools remove solid blockages or items stuck to pipe walls. Especially suitable for smaller-diameter pipes, such as those in residences.
  • Vacuum pumping – For more severe contamination or tank cleaning, a combined pressure and vacuum truck flushes the system and simultaneously extracts dirt and wastewater. Often used together with high-pressure jetting.
  • CCTV inspection – After cleaning (or before scheduling), a visual inspection is carried out using a special robot camera to assess pipe condition and identify damage, cracks, and exact blockage locations.

Safety and Environmental Regulations
Sewer cleaning must be performed safely and in an environmentally responsible manner. Workers must use personal protective equipment and comply with occupational safety and waste management requirements. Contaminants and slurry removed during cleaning must be handled as wastewater and taken to an appropriate treatment plant.

Cleaning Frequency
Frequency depends on pipe age, usage, and local specifics. High-use areas like industrial parks or dense urban zones may require quarterly cleaning. In typical residential areas, annual or as-needed cleaning is usually sufficient.

Summary
Regular and professional sewer cleaning is an essential part of any functioning urban infrastructure or private property maintenance. It helps prevent blockages, avoid major damage, and ensure a hygienic and eco-friendly living environment. Efficient cleaning results in smoother water discharge, fewer emergencies, and longer pipe life.
